Survey Instrument

INSTRUMENT
The MSL research team will create a questionnaire specifically for the purposes of this study. A large portion of this instrument will rely on the Socially Responsible Leadership Scale (Tyree, 1998), an 85-item instrument designed to measure leadership development across the eight critical values associated with the social change model. Tyree's dissertation was a recipient of the NASPA Melvene Hardee Dissertation of the Year Award. Each construct is comprised of between 10 and 12 items. Participants self report using a 5-point Likert scale response continuum ranging from strongly disagree (1) to strongly agree (5). Internal reliability for this instrument ranges from .72 for controversy with civility to .90 for citizenship. This instrument is supplemented with questions designed to examine environmental factors as well as control for pre-college inputs. Secondary outcomes critical to student learning and development such as critical thinking and appreciation of diversity will be measured as well. Participating institutions will be allowed to add up to 10 custom questions based on their own unique interests.
