Dr. Susan R. Komives, Co-Principal Investigator
Susan is co-founder of NCLP and serves as research and scholarship editor of
Concepts & Connections. She is co-author of Exploring Leadership: For College
Students Who Want To Make A Difference (Jossey Bass, 1998), Management and
Leadership Issues for A New Century (Jossey-Bass, 2000), Student Services: A Handbook
for the Profession (Jossey-Bass, 1996 & 2003), and was a member of the ensemble
that developed the Social Change Model of Leadership. She is editor of the
Insights & Applications leadership monograph series with NCLP and co-editor of the
forthcoming Handbook for Student Leadership Programs. Her recent leadership
research includes being PI for a grounded theory on Leadership Identity Development
(Journal of College Student Development, 2005). She is Associate
Professor and Director of the Maryland College Student Personnel graduate program. In 2006 Susan
is being honored with both the ACPA Contribution to Knowledge Award and the NASPA Outstanding Contirbution

John P. Dugan, Co-Principal Investigator
John currently serves as Coordinator for Student Involvement and Leadership and is
a doctoral student in the College Student Personnel Program at the University of
Maryland, College Park. In addition to teaching several leadership courses, he has presented at national conferences on
leadership topics relating to assessment, cultural influences, and peer education.
He is co-editor of the forthcoming Handbook for Student Leadership Programs
(NCLP) and author of Cross Cultural Leadership, a monograph in the NCLP
Insights & Applications Series. John currently serves as Vice Chair of Publications
for the ACPA Commission for Student Involvement and edits the quarterly publication
Interchange. He is the 2006 recipient of the ACPA Burns B. Crookston Doctoral Research
Award, was named a 2003 recipient of the ACPA Emerging Professional Annuit Coeptis, and in 2001 was named the
ACPA Commission of Student Involvement Outstanding Graduate Student. John can be reached at dugan@umd.edu.
Tom Segar, Project Manager
Thomas C. Segar is a first-year doctoral student in the University of Maryland's
College Student Personnel Program, and is a Counseling and Personnel Services
research and teaching fellow. He holds a master's of science degree in counseling
with a specialization in college student personnel from Shippensburg University of
Pennsylvania, and a bachelor's of science degree in psychology, with a certificate
in Afro-American studies from the University of Maryland. He is a Lead Facilitator
for the LeaderShape Institute and is a Social Justice Training Institute alumnus.
Tom has worked as a student development professional in residence life, multicultural
student affairs, learning assistance, and disability support services prior to
beginning his doctoral studies at the University of Maryland. Tom can be reached at

Craig Slack, Research Team Member
Craig is an Assistant Director in the Office of Campus Programs, Director of
the NCLP, Director of the National Clearinghouse for Commuter Programs, and Affiliate
Instructor for the School of Education at the University of Maryland. Craig has
invested the past nineteen years of his professional career working in the area of
student involvement and leadership training, education, and development. Currently,
in his Assistant Director role he oversees multiple functional areas ranging from
undergraduate student involvement, student organization accounts and
services, student government and student legal services, and the curricular and
co-curricular leadership development programs. Craig is a co-editor for the forthcoming

Kristan Cilente, Research Team Member
Kristan is the Senior Program Coordinator in the Office of Community Service
Learning at the University of Maryland-College Park. She completed her Bachelor of
Arts in Sociology and History from the College of William & Mary and her Master of
Arts in Higher Education Administration from the University of Arizona. She also
worked at Georgetown University as the Assistant Director of Orientation and
Leadership Programs. Kristan has presented at numerous national conferences and
holds a leadership position in ACPA-College Student Educators International.

Kirsten Fox, Research Team Member
Kirsten is a first year doctoral student in the College Student Personnel Program at
the University of Maryland. Although she currently serves as the Coordinator for the
Senior Year Experience, Kirsten previously worked within the Stamp Student Union and
Campus Programs. While at Maryland, Kirsten has taught the university’s freshman
seminar class as well as two different leadership classes. Kirsten serves as the
advisor to multiple campus organizations and was a staff facilitator this year for
the University’s inaugural Alternative Spring Break. Kirsten can be reached at

Sean Gehrke, Research Team Member
Sean is in his second year of Masters work in College Student Personnel at
the University of Maryland. He currently serves as the Graduate Advisor to
Student Entertainment Events and has extensive experience with residence
life and advising campus programs and student organizations. He has taught
leadership classes and recently authored a chapter on learning styles and
outcomes for the NCLP's Handbook for Student Leadership Programs. Sean can

Paige Haber, Research Team Member
Paige is a master’s student in the College Student Personnel Program at the
University of Maryland, College Park. As an undergraduate, Paige was a student in
the Arizona Blue Chip Program, a four-year leadership program at the University of
Arizona. She is the author of Structure, Design, & Models of Student Leadership
Programs, a chapter in NCLP’s Handbook for Student Leadership Programs.
Paige also coordinated the efforts of the student voices component of the second
edition of Exploring Leadership: For College Students Who Want to Make a Difference.

Renardo Hall, Research Team Member
Renardo is a doctoral student in the College Student Personnel Administration Program at the
University of Maryland, College Park. He holds a Master of Science in Education degree (MSED)
from Northern Illinois University. Renardo serves the National Association of Student Affairs
Professionals (NASAP) in several different capacities. He is the founder and coordinator of the
NASAP Student Leadership Institute. The Institute provides leadership development for newly elected
SGA and NPHC officers from the Nation's HBCUs. Renardo also serves NASAP as its president-elect.
He has 18 years of professional experience and is NASAP's 2004 recipient of the Sadie M. Yancey Professional Award. Renardo is currently on academic leave from Bowie State University, but serves the
institution as Dean for Student Affairs and Campus Life. He can be reached at

Katie Hershey, Research Team Member
Katie is a masters student in the College Student Personnel Program at the University of Maryland.
Before coming to Maryland, Katie spent several years in the non-profit field, most recently working
for two years at Chicago’s Food Bank where she directed its volunteer program and initiated the
creation of a service-learning program for high school students. She currently works as the
Coordinator for Student Leadership in Community Service-Learning and teaches a community service

Ramsey Jabaji, Research Team Member
Ramsey is a first-year Master’s student in the College Student Personnel Program at the University of
Maryland where he also serves as a Residential Fellow in the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.
Prior to beginning his Master’s work at the University of Maryland, Ramsey was a Hall Director and
Special Programs Coordinator at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania as well as the
Graduate Assistant at the International Leadership Association. While at Franklin & Marshall, Ramsey
created and co-directed a faculty-led residential based program called “Gray Matter,” which received
a grant from the AAC&U’s Bringing Theory to Practice project. He can be reached at rjabaji@umd.edu.
Karol Martinez, Research Team Member
Karol is in her first year of Master's work in the College Student Personnel Program
at the University of Maryland. She currently serves as the Graduate Assistant for
the Maryland Leadership Development Program. Karol was the chair of the Genesis
Freshman Leadership Living-Learning Program at Florida State University and
ontributed to the creation and implementation of FSU LeaderShape activities. Karol

Marlena Martinez, Research Team Member
Marlena is a second year master's student in the College Student Personnel Program
at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is a graduate advisor for Student
Entertainment Events at and a Directorate Member of ACPA's Commission for Student
Involvement. Her research interests include student involvement, undergraduate
experiences of varying socio-economic status, and curricular leadership programs.

Jim Neumeister, Research Team Member
Now a Masters student in Maryland's College Student Personnel, Jim spent the previous seven years
practicing law in Cleveland, representing both employers and educational institutions. During his
legal career, Jim participated in Cleveland Bridge Builders, an innovative program integrating civic,
professional, and leadership development. Jim currently works in UMD's Office of Student Conduct,
teaches a leadership course, and serves on the Division of Student Affairs' Learning Outcomes Group.

Julie Owen, Research Team Member
Julie is coordinator of the academic leadership curriculum at the University of
Maryland. She has over ten years of professional experience in the field of
leadership development, service-learning, and assessment. She has taught
numerous leadership courses on three campuses and is the author of two
monographs for the NCLP. She is co-editor of the forthcoming
Handbook for Student Leadership Programs and will be the co-author on the
instructor's manual and workbook for the next edition of Exploring
Leadership: For College Students Who Want to Make a Difference. She has
contributed to several national research teams, including the Leadership Identity
Development (LID) project and National Study of Living Learning Programs. Julie can

Jermy Page, Research Team Member
Jeremy is a second year doctoral student in the University of Maryland’s College Student Personnel
Administration Program. He holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a communications minor from
Northern Illinois University, and a master’s of science degree in student affairs in higher education
from Colorado State University. He was previously employed as a Coordinator of Student Development
in the residence life department at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. He has
taught leadership courses at Colorado State University and Cal Poly, and has recently co-authored a
chapter on assessment and evaluation of leadership programs for the forthcoming NCLP publication,
Handbook for Leadership Programs. He has presented at numerous national conferences, and holds a
leadership position in ACPA’s Commission for Social Justice Educators. He can be reached at

Nathan Slife, Research Team Member
Nathan is in his first year of Master's work in College Student Personnel Program at
the University of Maryland. He currently serves as the Graduate Assistant for
Weekends at Maryland and Union Programs. Nathan has presented on leadership topics at
several national conferences and is a graduate of the President’s Leadership
Certification Program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Nathan can be reached

Jennifer Smist, Research Team Member
Jenn is in her second year working towards a Master's degree in College Student
Personnel at the University of Maryland. She currently serves as a Program
Coordinator with the Women in Engineering Program. Prior to coming to the
University of Maryland, Jenn spent two years serving as an AmeriCorps*VISTA with
Massachusetts Campus Compact at Springfield College and has extensive experience in
community service learning. She has taught a leadership class and recently authored
a chapter on co-curricular leadership programs for the NCLP's Handbook for Student

Wendy Wagner, Research Team Member
Wendy is a third year doctoral student in the College Student Personnel Program at
the University of Maryland. She is currently the Coordinator of the National
